R.U.R by Karel Capek

Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm. Sundays at 2:30pm.

In 1921, Czech playwright Karel Capek published his play, RUR: Rossum’s Universal Robots, to the world. The dark comedy took as its theme the dehumanization of society by its technology, as well as the self-destructive nature of mankind’s all-encompassing drive toward automation. Two years later, in 1923, the play had been translated into over 30 languages including English, by Paul Selver and Nigel Playfair. This resulted in adding a new word to our vocabulary, as “robot” was fated to no longer be simply an obscure Czech term for “worker”. Please join us for this hilarious cautionary tale from nearly a century ago, as its message is as contemporary as the latest entry in your Social Media newsfeed.

Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller

“Will you take that phony dream and burn it before something happens?”

It’s late at the Loman family house, but no one is sleeping. Tired yet restless, Willy Loman has come home unexpectedly from a business trip to the great concern of his wife and two sons. Willy’s mind has been wandering, bouncing back and forth between his seemingly glorious past, and his very troubled present. Something isn’t right. Over the next day the Loman family will struggle with demons from the past, prospects, success, failure, and, ultimately, the truth. Winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1949, Arthur Miller’s indelible classic about the American Dream, income inequality, mental illness, and identity is just as relevant today as it was when it profoundly shaped the course of American theatre over 70 years ago.

Stage Door Series Presents Shakespeare in Hollywood

Shakespeare in Hollywood, by popular playwright and York, PA native Ken Ludwig, imagines what sorts of silliness might have occured if the real Puck and Oberon had appeared in a puff of smoke and magic on the set of Warner Brother's 1934 Hollywood picture A Midsummer Night's Dream. When the actors cast in the roles of Oberon and Puck are temporarily unavailable (a historical fact of the film production), the real Oberon and Puck discover what the Hollywood star system of the 1930s was like as they fill in to play themselves. Much like the original play, magic and love and slapstick comedy situations collide with hilarious results in this original mash-up. Originally presented years ago by the Stage Door series as a reading, this remounting will incorporate previous cast members and an expanded group of new players as well. This smart, fast-paced comedy leaves audiences howling with laughter--don't miss it!

A Wake For Will!

  • Gamut Theatre Group

Join us for this FREE event commemorating the 400th anniversary of the passing of William Shakespeare. Gamut opens the bar and reception lobby stage to honor the legacy of the man responsible for bringing us all together!

What does Shakespeare mean to you? Maybe his work has somehow made you a better person. Maybe his words have given you ways to describe things that would otherwise have been indescribable. Or maybe you still can’t forgive him writing "Timon of Athens". Well, now is your chance to get it off your chest! Gamut joins hundreds of Shakespeare companies from around the world in celebrating SHAKESPEARE'S LEGACY 400 (www.stahome.org).

“Peggy’s Pub”, Gamut’s bar, will open at 7:30 PM and will remain open throughout the duration of the wake. This is a free event for the community. Guests are invited to enjoy a drink or two and step up to the mic to share their favorite memories or experiences of William Shakespeare. This can be a memorable production you saw, an inspiring English teacher’s lesson plan, that time you misquoted a sonnet to Judi Dench at an airport in Phoenix…anything.

“A Wake for Will” will feature readings and musings by Tara Herweg-Mann, Ro Weber, Julia Hatmaker, Paul Hood, and Billy Wolfgang, features musical performances by Mike Banks and Steph Werner. The event concludes with a toast to The Bard by Artistic Director J. Clark Nicholson.

All of this concludes a day-long celebration of the legacy of William Shakespeare, and we are proud to announce that Mayor Eric Papenfuse will be officially declaring April 23 to be “Shakespeare Day” in Harrisburg!
