A Streetcar Named Desire

Mysterious circumstances have brought Blanche DuBois to New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella and her brother-in-law Stanley. As Blanche desperately clings to a life of perfection and grandeur, Stanley has designs and desires of his own that will challenge and change his family forever. Considered by many to be one of the most sensual, dangerous, and intoxicating plays of the 20th century, A Streetcar Named Desire is a haunting tale of the delicate lies we tell, and the lives we lead in spite of them.

Stage Door Series Presents Gallathea

“Come, let us into the grove and make much one of another, that cannot tell what to think one of another.”

Before a trouser-wearing Viola swayed Illyrian hearts, before Rosalind dressed as Ganymede and wooed Orlando, before Puck used Cupid’s flower to wreak merry havoc, there was Gallathea. This 1588 gender-bending, love-affirming play by John Lyly is an Elizabethan rarity filled with gods (big and little), sea monsters, overprotective dads, enchanted nymphs, thwarted virgin sacrifices—and two cross-dressed girls who fall head over heels for one another and declare that love is love is love.

Our Town

Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town has been captivating and inspiring audiences for nearly a century. By deliberately chipping away at traditional theatrical devices, this play presents a humorous, touching, and intimate look at American small town life as the Gibbs and the Webb families discover, over time, they are connected in ways they never thought were possible. Through this fresh and engaging interpretation of the text, Our Town once again reminds us that nothing is quite as precious as the present moment.

Macbeth Educational Outreach Public Performances

“Something wicked this way comes…”  Gamut Theatre, the combined theatre of Harrisburg Shakespeare Company and Popcorn Hat Players Children’s Theatre, presents its highly acclaimed educational outreach production of Macbeth.  One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Macbeth follows the rise and fall of a Scottish lord-turned-King, whose ambition turns him into a brutal murderer consumed by the dark arts.  The play also explores the concept of fate vs. personal responsibility.

Recommended for ages 12 and up, the production is extremely accessible, employing Gamut’s unique educational outreach style of combining Shakespeare’s original text with modern “narrations” to bridge the most famous scenes from the play together into an easy-to-understand story. This dynamic show is performed by five highly–talented actors, runs 90 minutes, and features dramatic sword fights, which have become a hallmark of Gamut’s touring Shakespeare productions.  Each performance is followed by a talk-back discussion with the audience.  Workshops are also available for students to gain a deeper understanding of the play.

Their improv games, familiar to those who have watched "Whose Line Is It Anyway?," are all about using audience suggestions to drive their show. That means no two shows are alike.

The Harrisburg Improv Theatre is a performing arts theater specializing in long-form improvisational comedy. They offer weekly long-form improvisational comedy shows based on a one-word suggestion from the audience. In addition to shows every Friday and Saturday they also offer classes.

Founded in 2007, T.M.I. specializes in long- and short-form, character-driven improv, where simple suggestions from the audience pave the way for improvised journeys that range from the sublime to the ridiculous.

R.U.R by Karel Capek

Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm. Sundays at 2:30pm.

In 1921, Czech playwright Karel Capek published his play, RUR: Rossum’s Universal Robots, to the world. The dark comedy took as its theme the dehumanization of society by its technology, as well as the self-destructive nature of mankind’s all-encompassing drive toward automation. Two years later, in 1923, the play had been translated into over 30 languages including English, by Paul Selver and Nigel Playfair. This resulted in adding a new word to our vocabulary, as “robot” was fated to no longer be simply an obscure Czech term for “worker”. Please join us for this hilarious cautionary tale from nearly a century ago, as its message is as contemporary as the latest entry in your Social Media newsfeed.

Willy’s mind has been wandering, bouncing back and forth between his seemingly glorious past, and his very troubled present. Something isn’t right. Winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1949, Arthur Miller’s indelible classic about the American Dream, income inequality, mental illness, and identity is just as relevant today as it was when it profoundly shaped the course of American theatre over 70 years ago.

Stage Door Series Presents Shakespeare in Hollywood

Shakespeare in Hollywood, by popular playwright and York, PA native Ken Ludwig, imagines what sorts of silliness might have occured if the real Puck and Oberon had appeared in a puff of smoke and magic on the set of Warner Brother's 1934 Hollywood picture A Midsummer Night's Dream. When the actors cast in the roles of Oberon and Puck are temporarily unavailable (a historical fact of the film production), the real Oberon and Puck discover what the Hollywood star system of the 1930s was like as they fill in to play themselves. Much like the original play, magic and love and slapstick comedy situations collide with hilarious results in this original mash-up. Originally presented years ago by the Stage Door series as a reading, this remounting will incorporate previous cast members and an expanded group of new players as well. This smart, fast-paced comedy leaves audiences howling with laughter--don't miss it!
