Journey to the West is one of the most popular stories in China. Since his birth from a stone egg at the top of a mountain, the Monkey King knew he was destined for greatness. After causing no end of trouble, the Monkey King finally learns a lesson in humility when he is forced to serve a young monk on an impossible quest - they must travel from Imperial China to the heart of India to recover the scriptures of the great teacher Buddha. Combining Daosist philosophy with Buddhist wisdom in a fantastic adventure of monsters and gods, Journey to the West is an action-packed lesson in teamwork, redemption, perseverance and finding your place in the universe.
This will be the 6th performance for the Young Acting Company comprised of local actors ages 6-18. Past productions include Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. Even though the play is performed by children, the production value is the professional work of Gamut Theatre Group. Journey to the West is directed by Gamut’s Executive Director, Melissa Nicholson and the set is designed by Resident Scenic Designer, Ian Potter. The show features over 120 costumes designed by Linda Ann Hammond. The Monkey King will be played by two actors, Katie Latta and Kassidy Kramer, who will bring both expert comedic timing and gymnastic talent to the stage. Staged Combat is choreographed by Dan Burke, and features various weapons, martial arts, and gymnastics.
