After unraveling a deadly secret, Pericles, the Prince of Tyre, must flee his homeland to save his life from the wrath of a tyrannous king. What follows is an epic and swashbuckling tale spanning the globe as our hero navigates danger, love, birth, and death (with just a dash of piracy)! Both profoundly moving and refreshingly funny, Pericles, Prince of Tyre touches on themes very close to home: separated families, refugees, speaking truth to power, and the belief that miracles can and will happen. Join us for our fresh, diverse, and engaging take on Shakespeare’s greatest tale of adventure.

PERICLES
Matt Romain

“A man, whom both the waters and the wind In that vast tennis-court hath made the ball For them to play upon…”

Good at riddles and bad at sailing, Pericles is the journeying Prince of Tyre who gracefully endures a series of misfortunes and setbacks throughout his travels. On the run from a tyrannical king, Pericles feeds a starving nation, is shipwrecked, jousts for the favor of a princess, marries said princess, becomes a father, only to lose his entire family through a series of misunderstandings. All before intermission! A study in patience and kindness, Pericles is a Shakespearean hero you can unequivocally cheer on in the hope that a miracle could one day reunite him with his family.

Marina
Gabriella DeCarli

“When I was born the wind was north.”

So named for she was born at sea, Marina is the plucky and resourceful daughter of Prince Pericles. Placed in the care of a wicked king and queen, Marina narrowly escapes death by being unexpectedly kidnapped by pirates (who hasn’t?), only to find herself sold into an unimaginable and dangerous profession. Will her resilience and quick-thinking save her from her current state? Will she ever meet her parents? It’s Shakespeare, so it can really go either way.

Thaisa
Meredith Greene

“O dear Diana, where am I? Where’s my lord? What world is this?”

The daughter of a queen (and apparently a really heavy sleeper), Thaisa falls madly in love with Prince Pericles when he arrives at her kingdom and competes with several other knights for her favor. After marrying Pericles and giving birth to their child Marina, Thaisa finds herself separated from her family and washed ashore in a distant land due to a series of misunderstandings and rash decisions. She chooses to devote her life to the goddess Diana in hopes that the universe will one day reunite her with her family.

Gower
Phillip Wheeler

“To sing a song that old was sung From ashes ancient Gower is come”

Gower is based on the English poet John Gower who lived in the 1300s, and from whom Shakespeare likely drew inspiration for some of his works. Never heard of him? Yeah, neither have we, but you really don’t have to worry about that. Gower is the ancient and mysterious narrator of Pericles, Prince of Tyre. A trusted storyteller, compassionate and compelling, Gower offers us a miraculous and adventurous story of hope in the time of adversity. He also literally rises from ashes, which is pretty cool.
