SHAKESPEARE AND CLASSIC LITERATURE COMPANION WORKSHOPS

All workshops are taught by the Director and/or Professional Acting Company of Harrisburg Shakespeare Company and most center around HSC‘s 2016-2017 production of Romeo and Juliet. All workshops can be customized for ages 13 years through adult.

  1. BASIC WORKSHOP: Explore one (or more) of Shakespeare's famous soliloquies.  Learn how actors do text analysis and ultimately use the text to make bold character choices.  One instructor.  Length:  45 minutes. Student limit: 24 students maximum. Room requirements: best conducted in a classroom. Cost: $200 (expand to 1 hour : $260, 90 minutes:  $350)

  2. PAGE TO STAGE: INTRO TO DRAMATIC ACTION IN THE CLASSROOM: Gamut Theatre professional actors work directly with the teacher and students in their classroom to enhance understanding of the story! This workshop explores inter-character dynamics utilizing dialogue from a selected classic work.  An emphasis is placed upon the setting in which the action takes place and the relationships between characters which influence their choices and actions. The workshop centers around a classic piece of literature. Gamut Theatre Artistic Director, Clark Nicholson, works with the classroom teacher to establish content.  Current works open for study include To Kill a Mockingbird, The Crucible, The Glass Menagerie, and most Shakespeare plays. Two to three instructors. Length:  45 minutes. Student limit: 24 students. Room requirements: Stage, Classroom, or other clean, quiet environment.  Cost: $300 (expand to 1 hour:  $380, 90 minutes:  $500)

  3. Romeo and Juliet PREP: This workshop is good for the Shakespeare novice who is not familiar with the play.  Actors from the show lead the class through the high points of the play and provide simple “page to stage” activities for some of the most famous lines of the play.  This workshop should be conducted before seeing the performance.  Also available: Basic prep for Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet. Two instructors. Length:  45 minutes. Student limit: 30 students maximum. Room requirements: best conducted in a classroom. Cost: $300 (expand to 1 hour : $380, 90 minutes:  $500)

  4. AIR BROADSWORDS!: A student favorite!  Students and teachers get on their feet and learn simple Shakespearean fight choreography using air (imaginary) broadswords for dramatic conflict, while exploring text in-depth.  Helps students to understand that Shakespearean plays are more than literature, the words are meant to be acted.  Air Broadswords centers around Hamlet, Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet. Two instructors. Length:  45 minutes. Student limit: 24 students maximum. Room requirements: May be conducted in a classroom if desks are pushed to outside of room, creating a rectangular open space, “runway” style.  Best conducted in a large open space or stage.  We do not recommend a gym – the echo makes hearing instructions difficult. Cost: $300 (expand to 1 hour : $380, 90 minutes:  $500)
