Gamut Theatre Summer Academy- Teaching Assistants and Counselors

The Academy:
Gamut Theatre Summer Academy (GTSA) is a four-week theatre intensive for students ages 8-16 that takes place July 10 – August 4, 2017, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 6:00 pm.  Students are immersed in the study of Theatre, Dance/Movement, Voice, Writing, Stage Combat, Technical Design, and Improv.  Our accredited teaching staff is comprised of caring, creative, and highly talented teachers and professional artists who specialize in working with children/youth and have a background in the arts.  Children laugh and learn as they participate in age-appropriate activities and instruction, and rehearse and perform a play in a safe and fun environment.  No experience necessary.  Each intensive takes place over one week and culminates in a Friday night production starring the students.  A student can participate in one, two, three or all four weeks!  GTSA is held at Gamut Theatre at 15 N. 4th Street in Downtown Harrisburg.

Teacher’s Assistant & Counselor Program Description:
The GTSA will employ four (4) Teaching Assistants and three (3) Counselors for the 2017 Summer Program.  GTSA is looking for applicants who demonstrate leadership skills, have experience working with children, display warm and friendly personalities and embrace a good sense of humor.  Anyone with a serious interest in theatre and/or education is encouraged to apply. Must be 17 years of age or older before July 10, 2017.

Teaching Assistants (heretofore referred to as “TAs”) will:

  • Assist the Academy Instructors in all classes throughout the four week intensive program.  (Core Courses taught at the Academy are Acting, Dance/Movement, Voice, Writing, Stage Combat, Technical Design, and Improvisation). 
  • Have the opportunity to teach a lesson (with permission granted from each instructor).
  • Gain basic skills in Directing, Stage Management, Group Management and Theatre for Young Audiences.
  • Lead warm-up exercises / introductory activities for each teacher and theatrical games, assisted by the Counselors. 
  • Accompany the GTSA students to and from their classes, helping them with their projects, supervising breaks (and sometimes) supervising the students while they eat their lunch.
  • Assist with the final production each week.

 

Counselors will:  

  • Assist the TAs in all classes throughout the four week intensive program.  (Core Courses taught at the Academy are Acting, Dance/Movement, Voice, Writing, Stage Combat, Technical Design, and Improvisation). 
  • Gain basic skills in Directing, Stage Management, Group Management and Theatre for Young Audiences.
  • Participate in warm-up exercises / introductory activities for each teacher and theatrical games.
  • Accompany the GTSA students to and from their classes, helping them with their projects, supervising breaks, and supervising the students while they eat their lunches.
  • Assist with the final production each week.

 

Pay:

  • Teaching Assistants are paid Internships at $250/week for four weeks
  • Counselors are paid Apprenticeships at $125/week for four weeks

 

Criteria:

  • Must be available from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm each Monday through Friday from July 10 – August 4, 2017
  • Must be available each Friday (July 14, 21, 28 and August 4) until 6:30pm for post-performance duties
  • Must be available for two days of training prior to July 10, 2017 (Dates To Be Announced)
  • Must live in Central PA area: no housing is provided
  • Application, including Narrative and Letters of Recommendation must be received at Gamut Theatre by 5:00pm on Tuesday, April 18, 2017
  • Previous employees of GTSA need only submit an application, no letters or narratives are needed.
  • Interviews will be held the first two weeks of May 2017
  • Decisions will be made by late May 2017
  • Currently, we cannot offer housing nor parking passes for GTSA Teaching Assistants and Counselors.  Applicants need to live within a commuting radius of Harrisburg, PA and arrange for their own transportation and/or parking.
  • TEACHING ASSISTANTS ONLY – Must be college-age or older and have 2 letters of recommendation. Priority is given to those with a major or minor in Theatre or Education.  If hired, TA will be responsible for obtaining Child Abuse and Criminal Record Clearances as is customary for adults over 18 who work with children.  The cost of the clearances is approximately $55, and Gamut Theatre will provide instructions on how to apply.
  • COUNSELORS ONLY – Must be 17 years of age and have 1 letter of recommendation.   If under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian must sign application.  If 18 years of age or older, Counselor will be responsible for obtaining Child Abuse and Criminal Record Clearances as is customary for adults over 18 who work with children.  The cost of the clearances is approximately $55, and Gamut Theatre will provide instructions on how to apply.

This season Gamut Theatre Group is seeking 1 male Core Company Acting Intern. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate. The Core Company Acting Intern will perform throughout the 2017/2018 season in Harrisburg Shakespeare Company mainstage & touring productions, Popcorn Hat Players children’s theatre mainstage & touring productions, as well as assist with daily operations. If the Core Company Intern has special skills or interest in certain areas of theatre, be it administrative, technical, or educational; please clearly address these skills or interests in your application. ALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE and will require clearances to work with children.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities of this Position:

 Act in Educational Outreach production, Macbeth

 Act in Popcorn Hat children’s shows (up to 8 in-house, 2 touring)

 Act in and/or understudy roles in at least one or more of our mainstage season plays (Streetcar, Our Town, Midsummer)

 Teach and/or assist with Gamut Theatre Academy classes & educational workshops alongside our Core Company actors

 Optional: Private monologue coaching from Artistic Director, Clark Nicholson

 Optional: Weekly Core Company improv training sessions

 Assist with the administrative, production, &/or technical needs of Gamut Theatre

 Act as head liaison for all props or costume management, organization, & rentals

 Assist with the daily functions of Gamut Theatre, which include but are not limited to:

o Administrative & organizational tasks

o Cleaning & maintenance of the theatre

o Load in/strike for all productions

o Technical assistance

Compensation:

 $100 weekly stipend*

 Free parking in downtown Harrisburg

 Company housing provided

 1 week paid vacation

Basic Internship (Non-paid)

 Applications are accepted year-round.

Our basic internship gives the student an introduction to theatre management, technical theatre, and production work. Usually educational credit and/or community volunteer hours requirements can be
obtained in exchange for the student’s experience at Gamut Theatre. Hours are very flexible, but must be consistent (i.e. come to the theatre every Tue./Thurs. from 1-4 PM for one semester, work every day from 9-3 for one week, etc.) It is more structured than simply volunteering to work at the theatre.

Public Relations/Design Internship (Non-paid)

Applications are accepted year-round.

The public relations/design internship gives the student experience in public relations, marketing, and design. This is a great internship for students who are not necessarily focused on theatre, but would like to gain experience in a professional organization. Educational credit and/or community volunteer hours can be obtained. Students must be available to work consistent hours. This internship is designed to help students build their portfolio in marketing/advertising.

Requirements:

  • Must be available on a consistent basis
  • Must be at least 18 years old
