GAMUT THEATRE PRESENTS

Directed by Thomas Weaver

With Clark Nicholson as King Lear

“Who is it that can tell me who I am?”

Madness, treachery, and redemption descend like a storm in one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies.

After an 8-year hiatus, Harrisburg’s “go-to” Shakespeare company is back-to-the-bard and better-than-ever with King Lear on the Select Medical Mainstage. Clark Nicholson, Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Gamut Theatre, returns to the stage as the troubled king in this timeless masterpiece of power, betrayal, and the tragic fragility of existence.

Gamut’s King Lear is set in a Celtic, Iron-Age Britannia. Ancient Druidic practices and beliefs serve as a backbone for this story, making for some creepy and beautiful moments. Here’s your warning – there will be lots of blood and guts.

As Lear grapples with the unraveling of his family and his mind, the play explores the limitless depths of human suffering and forgiveness. Who are we when everything we’ve known is stripped away from us? What is nothingness, and how does that haunt the soul? Needless to say, audiences will leave King Lear with some big questions.

So, if you like sick combat, quick dialogue, spiritual connectivity, or existential questioning… you’ll love Gamut Theatre’s production of King Lear.

PRAISE FOR KING LEAR

“Every element of this production is well thought out to create an intense, engaging, breathtaking performance… Tom Weaver and fight director Elizabeth Hood deserve a special round of applause. The use of movement in this production is among the best this reviewer has seen. The battle scene in particular is powerful and riveting… Audiences will find the performances and creative and technical elements enthralling and the story sadly relevant to today’s world.” - Andrea Stephenson, BroadwayWorld

“If you’re a fan of overly violent stories where only a few characters live until the end, and the remaining characters are missing a few body parts, get thee to Gamut Theatre to see King Lear.” - Gina Napoli, TheBurg

“If your teen is studying Shakespeare, questioning the world, or craving something that feels bigger than scrolling, this is the kind of cultural experience that sticks. It challenges them. It respects them. And it absolutely gives you something real to talk about on the drive home.” – Macaroni KID HBG
